Subscribe by the 10th to get this month's box!
The KOKÚMỌ box will arrive at your door each and every month filled with interesting African history, an educational science, technology, engineering, art, and/or math (STEAM) activity, and thoughtful gifts. African History will include people and/or events from Africans - African Americans, in the Americas, on the continent, in Europe - all over the world. The first KOKÚMỌ box will be shipped on or around September 20, 2017. After which, each box will be shipped on or around the 20th of each month.
Each box will vary based on the historical figure highlighted for the month. Every box comes complete with a history lesson, a science, technology, engineering, art and/or math (STEAM) activity and at least two memorabilia related to the subject matter. For example, the first KOKÚMỌ box includes a biographical sketch and history lesson about Thomas Sankara, Burkina Faso's first president. There is also an urban planning and sustanability exercise associated with the lesson. The gifts have been handpicked by us and were sourced directly from Burkinabé people. The colorful bracelets were made from recycled plastic bags and the pencil holders come from cotton grown and woven in Burkina Faso.
The KOKÚMỌ box can be obtained in one of three separate age/learning groups:1) The younger ages, Grades K-4 (ages 5-9), will require adult supervision especially for the emerging readers. The vocabulary and questions will need to be facilitated and the activity will require direction. 2) Grades 5-8 (ages 10-13) may require some moderate adult supervision. 3) Grades 9-12 (ages 14-17) can be done independently. The activities for all ages are the same but have modified vocabulary and questions based on the age groups.
The KOKÚMỌ Starter Kit, which comes complete with a colorful 24"x36" Peters Projection Map, a KOKÚMỌ Timeline spanning over 5,000 years from Before the Common Era to the present and a 1.5" organizational KOKÚMỌ Binder with side pockets to organize each historical figure's content, the monthly lessons and activities, is not required for the monthly subscription box and may be purchased separately. Each item in the starter kit may also be purchased individually. However, the Starter Kit does supplement the materials provided in the monthly subscription box and provides more instructional content. For instance, there are a timeline and map exercises included in the lessons. Since these two items are included in the starter kit, they may help to further the student's understanding of the lesson. The binder is a part of the kit to help organize the student's lessons in one place for reference.
Yes. The activity may be done individually or as a group. However, each box comes with at least two different gifts or memorabilia associated with the activity and is designed for one person but may be shared.
